Parenting Seminar at the Explorium
The Explorium is planning another parenting event! My kids had a blast playing in the museum and having supper while I enjoyed a great session with their speaker! Check it out!
Dr. Edward R. Amend, Psy. D will present Keeping Kids Motivated on March 24, 2011 from 6:30 - 7:45 p.m.
The Explorium will be open and staffed for children of attendees during this event. The event is free for both parents and children but does require a reservation for your child. A light supper will be served for all children attendees. Call Kristi Troncone at 859-258-3253 ext 11 to reserve your child's spot. Children can arrive as early as 6 PM. The seminar will begin at 6:30 p.m. and conclude at 7:45 p.m.

Zip Line Through Rupp!!

Kindergarten Readiness!
I can't believe I have to register my 'baby' for Kindergarten on Monday! My it has gone by fast! Fayette County registration begins February 14th. You can get more information online at the Fayette County webite. You can also find some great information on the skills that will be evaluated.
Can your child?
Name uppercase and lowecase letters (out of order)
When shown alphabet letters can make correct letter sounds
Create rhymes, identify rhymes
Identify beginning sounds and say other words with the same sound
Write their first name
Count to 20, identify numbers to 20 (out of order)
Identify colors
Count a group of objects
Identify smallest and largest, fewest, most, and same
Can sort objects by color, shape, and size
Write numbers from 1- 10
The five developmental areas for school readiness are:
Approaches to learning;
Health and physical well being;
Language and communication development;
Social and emotional development; and
Cognitive and general knowledge
The state of Kentucky has also worked on developing kindergarten readiness skills
Health and Physical Well-Being
My child:
Eats a balanced diet
Gets plenty of rest
Receives regular medical and dental care
Has had all necessary immunizations
Can run, jump, climb, and does other activities that help develop large muscles and provide exercise
Uses pencils, crayons, scissors, and paints and does other activities that help develop small muscles
Emotional and Social Preparation
My child:
Follows simple rules and routines
Is able to express his or her own needs and wants
Is curious and motivated to learn
Is learning to explore and try new things
Has many opportunities to be with other children and is learning to play and share with others
Is able to be away from parents/family without being upset
Is able to work well alone
Has the ability to focus and listen
Language, Math and General Knowledge
My child:
Uses 5-6 word sentences
Sings simple songs
Recognizes and says simple rhymes
Is learning to write her name and address
Is learning to count and plays counting games
Is learning to identify and name shapes and colors

Aviation Camps!
Is your child interested in aviation - this sounds like a great way to explore those interests. What a new way to experience summer camps! The forms for the 2011 Aviation Summer Camp program for camps that are being held in Lexington are now online at the AMK website. Besides the five camps that will be held at the Museum's facility at Blue Grass Airport, a form to request Financial Aid is also available. Camps will be held in June and are for children age 10 - 15.
Additional camps are planned for outside of the Lexington area, the details for those camps still need to be finalized .
If you are interested in giving a donation to help sponsor a child at summer camp, please email us at camps2011@aviationky.org and we will let you know how you can help a child discover the thrill of aviation.
