Super Saturday at KET

The Cat in the Hat, PBS KIDS host Mr. Steve and WordGirl will join us for this year’s Super Saturday

August 6 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
KET Network Center at 600 Cooper Drive, Lexington.
This event is free and open to the public.

Kids can meet all the characters and explore hands-on music and science activities!

After the enthusiasm parents and kids showed for The Cat in the Hat at KET’s Super Saturday event last year, we’re bringing him back! Kids will have the opportunity to meet one of the most beloved characters in children’s literature.

With his melodic voice and guitar, Mr. Steve delights preschoolers every day. On PBS KIDS, Mr. Steve blends participatory songs, clever stories and great melodies to create an engaging experience for kids. Combining his two passions, music and kids, Mr. Steve believes he has “the coolest job ever.”

Superhero WordGirl fights crime using superhero strength and her colossal vocabulary with her monkey sidekick, Captain Huggy Face. Disguised as mild-mannered fifth grader Becky Botsford, WordGirl arrived on planet Earth when she and Captain Huggy Face crashed their spaceship!

Griffin's Gift Support Group

Each year, more than 4,000 infants die in the United States due to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and Sudden Unexplained Infant Death (SUID). Kentucky had 75 deaths attributed to SIDS in 2008, and usually ranks first or second in the nation for SIDS cases. These numbers could be even higher as they do not include the more recent designation of Sudden Unexplained Death of a Child (SUDC).

On October 30, 2010, we lost our six-week old son, Griffin, to SUID. While trying to cope with our devastating loss, we found very few options for grieving families looking for information on SUID, available research data, counseling options, or support groups. Specifically, we were unable to find these resources in Lexington. This need led us to create Griffin’s Gift – The Gift of Hope to provide hope, support and resources to Kentucky parents, families, and friends after they have experienced the unexpected death of a child.

As part of our mission, we will be hosting a monthly peer-led support group at the following times and location:
Griffin’s Gift Support Group
(for anyone touched by SIDS, SUID or SUDC)
Tuesday, August 9th, 2011 – from 7:00 – 8:30
(with monthly meetings on the 2nd Tuesday thereafter)

Southland Christian Church
5001 Harrodsburg Road
Nicholasville, KY 40356
Building B, Room 108/110

For more information, visit www.southlandchristian.org/care
Or email – griffinsgift@hotmail.com

Sessions will include informal discussions as well as more specific discussions led by a variety of speakers with expertise on this topic – including counselors, physicians, EMT personnel, police officers and coroners.

Also, we are looking for volunteers who may be interested in speaking at one of our upcoming meetings. For more information, contact Aneisa or Geoff Hall at 859-887-4159 or e-mail griffinsgift@hotmail.com.

The Circus Is Coming!

We Have Your Discount Ticket Code!

August 26 – 28, 2011
Rupp Arena ● Lexington, KY

“Barnum 200″ is billed as “The Biggest Birthday Bash in Circus History.” Ringmaster Jonathan Lee Iverson invites the audience to leap aboard the Ringling Bros. train and go on a family FUNtastic adventure to meet exotic characters and witness thrilling performances.

The Flying Caceres will attempt to complete the elusive quadruple somersault on the flying trapeze: a feat that hasn’t been mastered in more than three decades. The Puyang troupe from China will dazzle with a stunning display of dexterity as they bounce, flip, and twirl to new heights on a two-tiered trampoline. Through impossible contortions, body benders will fit three humans in a cube the size of a milk crate. The Mighty Meetal, the strongest man in the world, will lift more than 1,200 pounds. Among the hand balancers will be Duo Fusion, a married pair of performers with a twist – the wife does the heavy lifting.

Patrons can arrive an hour before show time for the All Access Pre-show – free to all ticket holders – where they can meet performers and animals, learn circus skills and enjoy a taste of the performance before the show even starts.

Firefighter Challenge Aug 13 - 14

Mark your calendars now so you can plan to head out to Lexington Green for the Scott Firefighter Combat Challege.  They have hosted the event in the past and the course itself looks awesome!

Welcome to the Scott Firefighter Combat Challenge®- seen on ESPN for a dozen years, now on Versus. The Challenge annually attracts hundreds of U.S. and Canadian municipal fire departments at more than 25 locations and is now expanding to countries around the world, including New Zealand, Germany, Argentina, Chile, and South Africa. The Challenge seeks to encourage firefighter fitness and demonstrate the profession's rigors to the public. Wearing "full bunker gear" and the SCOTT Air-Pak breathing apparatus, pairs of competitors race head-to-head as they simulate the physical demands of real-life firefighting by performing a linked series of five tasks including climbing the 5-story tower, hoisting, chopping, dragging hoses and rescuing a life-sized, 175 lb. "victim" as they race against themselves, their opponent and the clock.
