Living Arts and Science Center Classes and Events

The Living Arts and Science Center is located downtown on Martin Luther King Blvd.  It's a wonderful gem in the heart of downtown and they offer classes for all ages!  There are scholarships available also!

Each month they host a special Discovery Night and there are special events throughout the year.  Be sure to check out their website for more information and head downtown and participate in an event soon!



Art & Science Children’s Classes @ LASC

Introduction to DrawingTaught by Annie Denham—Drawing is where it all begins! Are you serious about drawing and want to make lots of beautiful drawings? This class will give you lots of opportunity to draw and develop your skills and drawing style. We will create lots of drawings and study techniques of the masters.

Printmaking & Handmade Books Taught by Lauren Rose Wilder and Jamie Karolich— Learn to create handmade books and then fill them with your amazing stamped and printed images. In this class we will be learning Japanese stab binding to make our books. We will also learn basic block carving techniques using linoleum which is easier to carve than wood. Come with your ideas and get ready to carve!

Art & Science Teen/Adult Classes @ LASC DIY ScreenprintingTaught by Stephen Joseph Wiggins—Join us to learn the Do-It-Yourself method of silkscreen printmaking, a practice that anyone can learn and do in the comfort of their own home. We’ll use block out and photo emulsion methods that enables the student to print cards, gifts, t-shirts and other items DIY-style at home or in the studio.

LASC Knitting ProjectTaught by K. Crane—Join in this fun group experience to knit and create a “yarn bombing” in downtown Lexington. Yarn bombing takes the craft of knitting and transfers it to the urban streetscape. Trees, lampposts— even objects as big as buses and bridges—have been “bombed” in recent years. Beginners are welcome so if you don’t know how to knit, we’ll teach you. The location of our yarn bombing will be revealed at our first meeting. Yarn is supplied unless you have something special you would like to use. You will need to bring a pair of #10 or larger knitting needles.

So You Wanna Be an Eco-Fashionista?Taught by Jennifer Stephenson McLamb—Make a planet-friendly fashion statement with your own hand-made designs from recycled items. We will explore the use of alternative materials in fashion design and make a total of 4 fashion accessories. This is a unique opportunity for fun, creative expression, learning earth-friendly studio practices, and experiencing the thrill of designing and making your own wearable artwork.

Intro to Computer Music RecordingTaught by Brian Bertucci—Use computers to create and record your own music! We’ll show you everything you need to get started using loops, samples, and microphones to create original songs. We’ll explore the software to create multitrack recordings, as well as effects, and how to get professional sounding recordings. Students will gain an understanding of how songs are recorded in a studio, and leave with a CD of their original work!

Snow, frost, and ice, oh my! Discover signs of winter by taking a walk in The Arboretum looking at trees and animal homes. Then warm up inside with story time. Children will make a winter scene to take home. Cost: $1

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Ages 6+

In this class we will find new ways to use old things by making eco-art. Cost: $1

Junior Naturalist - Winter Hideaways Ages 7-11
Thurs., Feb. 2, 4:00-5:15 p.m.
We’ll discover how animals and people stay warm in winter, take a weather observation hike, and make icicles. Cost: $1

Oh Deer! Ages 2-6 Sat., Feb. 4, 11:00 a.m.
What is a habitat? We will take a walk outdoors looking for spaces that animals call their home. Then we’ll come inside for story time and make a deer craft to take home. Cost: $1

Junior Naturalist - Tree Detective Ages 7-11
Thurs., Feb. 9, 4:00-5:15 p.m.
Learn clues that naturalists use to identify trees during winter and “adopt” a tree to study all year. Cost: $1

Love the Earth! Ages 2-6
Tues., Feb. 14, 10:00 a.m.
Celebrate love for the earth on Valentines’ Day. Make a terrarium of green plants to take home and nurture. Bring a container appropriate for a small terrarium; we’ll provide the plants. Cost: $1

Junior Naturalist - Flying Adventures Ages 7-11 Thurs.,Feb.16,4:00-5:15 p.m.
Birds sometimes have a difficult time finding food in the winter. Bring a carton to transform into a bird feeder for your backyard. We’ll learn some techniques birders use to identify our feathered friends. Cost: $1

Junior Naturalist - Nature Nurturer Ages 7-11
Thurs.,Feb. 23,4:00-5:15p.m.
Explore the importance of the native ecosystems of Kentucky. Go on a native plants walk, make a terrarium out of re-used materials, become an earth steward. Cost: $1

Learn about our insect pals and about metamorpho- sis. Make a butterfly to take home.

March 28: Let’s Grow Outside
Help us plant in the Kentucky Children’s Garden and take a flower home to nurture.
