Healthy Kids Day

Sunday, April 29
The Healthy Kids Day Fun Fest will take place at the University of Kentucky’s Nutter Field House from 2-5 p.m. and will feature activities such as relay races, inflatables, hula hoops, soccer, obstacle courses and more.
The YMCA of Central Kentucky is celebrating Healthy Kids Day® with a free community event open to all kids and families. More than 1,900 Ys across the country are taking part in the celebration, meant to kick start physical activity and learning throughout the summer – a critical out-of-school time for kids.
Healthy Kids Day, a national initiative of the Y to improve the health and well-being of kids, is filled with fun, active play and educational activities that will help parents improve their kids’ lifestyles for the long term. Research shows that without access to activities that stimulate the mind and body, kids are more prone to gain weight and fall behind academically over the summer months.
“At the YMCA of Central Kentucky, we know that when the school year ends, many kids lose exposure to activities that keep them moving and learning. Healthy Kids Day will help parents begin thinking early about what their kids need to stay physically and intellectually active in the summer,” said Tom Blackman, Interim Chief Executive Officer of the YMCA of Central Kentucky. “Summer is just around the corner and is an ideal time for kids to get out and grow so they are healthier and sharper when the next school year begins.”
A leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, the Y holds Healthy Kids Day to teach healthy habits and inspire a lifetime love of physical activity through active play. As part of this initiative, the Y – along with hundreds of thousands of parents and kids nationwide – is taking on summer by addressing critical gaps in health and education that cause kids to be at risk for childhood obesity and suffer summer learning loss.
In addition, the Y is proud to host representatives from several local organizations and businesses who will provide free health information, screenings and services.
For more information, contact the YMCA of Central Kentucky at 254-9622 or visit www.ymcaofcentralky.org.

On a typical Saturday, more than 1,000 people will eat breakfast at the track, Balog said. Reservations are neither needed nor taken.
During breakfast kids can:
■ Watch the Thoroughbreds get their morning workout before the big race.
■ Learn more about horse racing with ongoing trackside commentary.

A Breakfast with the Works purchase is not necessary to participate in activities.
Saturdays after breakfast
The paddock area is bustling with activity after breakfast. Depending on the day, kids can meet and interact with professionals in the horse industry: equine dentists, blacksmiths and horse farm owners. These industry professionals offer free demonstrations and a question-and-answer time.
From 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., children will be able to meet a true Keeneland icon: Buckey the Bugler. Buckey will be at the Winners Circle for an hourlong photo opportunity and meet-and-greet. Additionally, photos will be uploaded to Facebook where fans can tag themselves for friends and family to see.
From 12:05 to 12:25 p.m., jockeys are in the paddock area answering questions and meeting fans.

LOVE Shutterfly!
My son's sixth birthday is coming up and as a splurge I ordered cool photo cards from Shutterfly! I usually make them by hand with photographs and scrapbook stuff but since we're inviting his entire class at school, church friends, and neighbors I decided I'd save myself a few hours of work! Love the invites and also all the photo books I've created!
